Nagaur is a city in the state of Rajasthan in India about midway between Jodhpur and Bikaner. Nagaur was founded in the 4th century BC and its historical significance is closely linked to its geography, as it lay along ancient trade and invasion routes at the edge of the Thar desert. Nagaur Fort (Ahhichatragarh or Fort of the Hooded Cobra) was one of the first Muslim strongholds in northern India and one of the finest examples of Rajput-Mughal architecture. Built in the early 12th century and repeatedly altered over subsequent centuries, it witnessed many battles and was an ancient site of Sufism. The fort underwent major renovations in 2007 with 90 fountains now running in the gardens and buildings. The fort’s buildings and spaces, both external and internal, serve as venue, stage and home to a unique and spiritual Sufi Music Festival.
